IRS Extends Deadlines for IRA and Health Savings Account Contributions to May 17

IRS has announced that individuals have until May 17 to make contributions to IRAs and health savings accounts. Foreign trusts and estates that file Form 1040-NR also have until May 17 to file and pay. This follows a previous announcement extending the 2020 federal individual income tax filing due date to May 17.

Notice 2021-21 notes that no extension is provided for the payment or deposit of any other type of federal tax including estimated income tax payments, or for the filing of any federal return other than the Form 1040 series and the Form 5498 series for the 2020 tax year.

Last week, NAEA and the American Institute of CPAs sent a joint letter urging the Treasury and IRS to provide filing and payment relief for all taxpayers for the 2021 tax filing season, including those with installments and estimated payments.
